“If you do good to others, they will do good in return,” Dr. Isagani Leal, Tanchoco Memorial Lecture guest speaker said last December 7, 2017 at the MCU Helix Auditorium. This is one of his simple guiding principles in life and career.
Dr. Leal, an MCU College of Medicine alumni, touched on the lecture theme “Continuing the Legacy of Excellence in Centralino Education Through Core Values”. He told the MCU community his inspiring life story in line with the MCU values: perseverance, prudence, resiliency, integrity and teamwork.
Dr. Leal is a pioneer in the field of Musculoskeletal Medicine in the country. He is the director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Science–Asia (CMS–Asia) located at West Avenue, Quezon City. CMS–Asia caters patients suffering from musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, back pain and sports injuries.
Dr. Leal set-up a resort in his hometown in Cotabato City to generate employment for residents and the earnings subsidizes his 78 scholars.
“This is way of giving back to others. I am sponsoring these children’s education with high hopes of them giving back later to the younger generation in our province,” Dr. Leal said. “Instrumento lang ako ng Panginoon para matulungan kong makapag-aral ang mga kabataan sa amin.”
The audience were awed with some teary-eyed as he recounted his days as a medical student. Born to a jeepney driver and a public school elementary teacher, the young Dr. Leal strived the hard to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor. He worked as a food chain service crew and housekeeper to help his parents finance and sustain his education.
Being in the medical school is tough but Dr. Leal is tougher. He remained resilient despite the challenges he encountered in life. He used these experiences to reach his dreams and be what is he is now.
Early in his career, Dr. Leal worked in the Department of Health (DOH) program “Doctor to the Barrio” for 9 years. He became the coordinator of the Community-Based Rehabilitation Program and because of his exceptional achievements, the DOH sent him to Israel at the Tel Aviv University International Post-Graduate Training Program in Sheba Medical Center to specialize in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Medicine.
In his remarks, Dr. Renato C. Tanchoco, Jr., Vice President for Planning and External Affairs, urged the students emulate Dr. Leal and do well in their studies. Despite the difficulties in life and studying medicine, Dr. Leal achieved and reached his goals.
The annual lecture was attended by MCU Officials led by Mrs. Luningning T. Estanislao, Acting President, Dr. Ramon C. Cercado, Executive Vice President, Mr. Raymond Manlapas, Executive Vice President of the MCU-FDTMF, Mr. Ira Daniel B. Maniquis, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Mr. Erwin D. Roxas, VP for Finance, Ms. Aini E. Salvadora, Human Resource Director, alumni, deans, department heads, students and employees.
