Manila Central University (MCU) and Essilor Philippines Optical Distribution, Inc. inaugurated the first Essilor Sight Center in MCU last June 9, 2015.

MCU is one of the Philippines top performing optometry schools today while Essilor is a worldwide leader in developing and manufacturing ophthalmic lenses, lens coating and dispensary technologies in over 100 countries.

“The MCU-Essilor Sight Center will help us (in MCU) to continue our mission to develop highly qualified optometrists who will provide excellent eye and vision care for Filipinos,” Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan, MCU President said. In his remarks Dr. Malabanan gave a brief background about the MCU College of Optometry that started in 1959 and was eventually recognized as a Center of Development by the Commission on Higher Education in 2009.

To highlight the opening of the facility, Dr. Malabanan, Dr. Emelita Roleda, General Manager of Essilor Philippines, and Dr. Christine Rodriguez, Dean of the MCU College of Optometry and Essilor Brand Ambassador Piolo Pascual cut the ceremonial ribbon witnessed by MCU students and officials, Essilor officials, media representatives, and other guests.

The MCU-Essilor Sight Center offers a venue for students to perform hands-on vision screening in an ideal clinic set-up with fully equipped refraction rooms, clinical refraction equipment and access to Essilor Academy’s advanced tools and practical training.

“We have chosen MCU as beneficiary because it is regarded as one of the top institutions for Optometry in the country,” Dr. Roleda said in her remarks. “We believe in MCU’s mission to produce highly competent optometrists who will provide quality eye and vision care for members of the community.”

MCU College of Optometry Dean Dr. Rodriguez on her part said, “The MCU- Essilor partnership will go a long way in helping our students especially in their Clinical Optometry practice. Through the sight center, we can reach people in the community by providing free examination in diagnosing and management of their visual needs.”
