History

The United States Army introduced the Medical Technology profession in the Philippines when they established a Medical Laboratory in Sta. Cruz, Manila towards the end of World War II in 1945.

Manila Central University was, then, one of the few schools which offered the B.S. Medical Technology course. In 1926, the course was offered under the College of Pharmacy in Zurbaran, Manila. Instrumental to the opening of the course were: Dr. Filemon G. Tanchoco, Jr. who was then Executive Vice President; Dean Jose L. Mencias of the College of Pharmacy; and Miss Corazon M. Mendoza.

The first dean of the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology was Dean Jose L. Mencias with Miss Corazon M. Mendoza as the first area head of the Department of Medical Technology. The first batch of graduates graduated in 1966. In 1980, Prof. Amelia S. de Juan became the dean. When Dean de Juan left for the United States in 1991, Dean Jose L. Mencias was re-appointed dean and in 1992, Prof. Teresa Valdez was appointed acting dean. In 1993, Dr. Luzaviminda S. Ong was appointed the dean up to the present.

Due to the increasing enrolment and to consolidate all course offerings in one campus, the administration of the Manila Central University created a master plan for a new building, to be built at the Caloocan Campus, that will house the 4 colleges located at the Manila Campus. These are the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology, Optometry and Dentistry. Before the start of second semester in 1996, the 4 colleges were transferred to the Purificacion Gallego Tanchoco Building with the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology occupying the 3rd and 4th floor.

In 1997, the College of Medical Technology was separated from the College of Pharmcy with apoointment of Ms. Petrona A. Benitez as the officer-in-charge.

At present, the college has a Level II, second reaccredited status given by Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities - Commision on Accreditation (PACU-COA). The college is affiliated with 9 different tertiary level hospitals in Metro Manila for internship training of fourth year students.
